An Introduction to Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt

Living in an underground bunker in Indiana, Kimmy Schmidt (The Office’s Ellie Kemper) and her three fellow cult inductees are under the impression that in the outside world, civilization has ended and that they are the last humans alive. No reason not to believe the caring and charismatic Rev. Richard Wayne Gary Wayne (Mad Men‘s Jon Hamm), cult leader!

After 15 years the women are rescued and ascend into a vibrant, intimidating world that shouldn’t even be there as far as they’re concerned – a massive culture shock for all. After the media excitement (behold the Mole Women!) dies down, Kimmy decides to embrace all things modern and make a go of things in New York City.

One of Kimmy’s first encounters is cynical landlady Lillian Kaushtupper (Carol Kane) who, on seeing Kimmy’s obvious wide-eyed naivety, cannot believe her luck. Step this way! This is swiftly followed by an introduction to future room-mate, Titus Andromedon (Tituss Burgess), a self-obsessed actor/singer who is dumbfounded by this trusting and unfashionably optimistic young woman. One the one hand she would be easy to exploit, but on the other hand, how could you do that to such a sweet person?

With a new foundation, a new life of discovery begins for the unflappable, unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. O brave new world, that has such people in’t! You go, Kimmy!

Summary

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt comes from the writing duo of Saturday Night Live’s Tina Fey and Robert Carlock. Anyone familiar with Tina Fey’s sharp, satirical comedy will expect a smart and funny show, but they may not expect how unusually charming this show also is – without being twee or manipulative. Prepare to be won over!

The show is fresh, occasionally bonkers and the perfect comedy vehicle for Ellie Kemper – in fact, it was written with her specifically in mind. She portrays our lovable protagonist with just the right amount of wide-eyed wonder and daffiness. Playing opposite, Tituss Burgess takes camp to new heights in the role of Kimmy’s cash-strapped diva room-mate, while Carol Kane and Jane Krakowski complete the main core as enjoyably prickly key players in Kimmy’s new life.

A final word from Kimmy: “Be you. Be what you want… and then become unbreakable.” Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt is a funny, eccentric show with a good heart, and long may that heart remain.
